Have you ever wanted to try a new restaurant but are concerned about its food handling and safety? Well although asking to see the kitchen may be a bit rude, you can follow a few tips to determine whether the restaurant values cleanliness or not.
Upon entering check that the restaurant displays it’s current health inspection certificate, has it been inspected recently and passed.

Look around for pests and cockroaches in particular. Flies are also a sign that a restaurant is not hygienic. If there are flies and cockroaches in the front of the restaurant they are probably also in the kitchen and food preparation area.
Inspect the toilets and ensure that they are clean. Also see that they provide antibacterial soap, remember the food preparation staff are probably using the same toilet and should be washing their hands with antibacterial soap each time they use the toilet.
Staff should also be wearing hair nets, nobody wants to find hair in their food.
Check the overall cleanliness and neatness of the place to ensure that the management values hygiene. Ensure that there is no dust and dirt on the floors, walls and ceilings and if possible peak into the kitchen and ensure everything’s above board before eating there.
